Starlink equipment is facing seizure at Cameroon's ports of entry due to lack of licensing, as the government cites national security and fair competition worries.
Customs Director General Fongod Edwin Nuvaga issued a notice to customs personnel, stating, "My attention has been drawn to numerous cases of imported telecommunications equipment known as Starlink. This type of technology, which enables an unrestricted, ultra-fast internet connection, is not subject to the Telecommunications Regulatory Board's oversight and hence poses a threat to national security."
The customs official accentuated that the confiscation would persist until SpaceX, the firm behind Starlink, is regulated in Cameroon.
Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Minette Libom Li Likeng had previously expressed concern over Starlink's presence in the country, highlighting the unlicensed operations' potential security implications.
