The high cost of petrol has posed significant challenges for most businesses in Nigeria and the economy at large. However, it has prompted some individuals and businesses to explore electric vehicles (EVs) as a viable alternative to petrol-powered vehicles.
Glovo is among the businesses considering this shift. The company has entered into a partnership with Siltech to utilize EV bikes for deliveries in select areas of Lagos. Tolu Williams, CEO of Siltech, confirmed the collaboration, noting that Glovo has committed to its products and services, which include charging stations, after-sales services, technical support, and battery swap access.
The initial pilot will launch in Ikate, Lekki, and Victoria Island, Lagos, where Siltech has established charging and battery swap stations. These stations reduce battery charging time from hours to minutes. The Siltech Ginsu bikes, to be used by Glovo riders, will feature this capability, allowing them to swap a drained battery for a fully charged one in mere minutes.
Williams clarified that, according to the partnership terms, Glovo will pay for these services but at a discounted rate, making it more cost-effective than using petrol.
While the partnership agreement is in place, a Glovo spokesperson indicated that EV bike deliveries would not commence for several months. Once operational, Williams anticipates a significant reduction in costs for Glovo due to Siltech providing a range of services. Siltech has evolved from solely manufacturing EVs to offering comprehensive EV services, creating what Williams refers to as an "EV ecosystem." This ecosystem already serves Tesla owners and various other EV users for charging and additional EV services.
