South African consumers are on the verge of accessing the highly anticipated Nothing Phone, with the smartphone brand set to debut in the country next month.
Cernotech, a prominent South African distributor, has successfully secured a deal to unveil Nothing Technology's latest offerings in the local market. This includes the flagship Nothing Phone 2 and the midrange Nothing Phone 2a.
Philip Goodwin, Cernotech’s product lead, shared exclusive insights with TechCentral, stating, "The Nothing Phone 2 and Nothing Phone 2a will be available for purchase in South Africa by early June." Goodwin further revealed that the products will be accessible online and through at least one major mobile operator, with negotiations nearing completion.
Regarding the introduction of Nothing Technology's earbuds in South Africa, Goodwin mentioned that a decision is pending, but hinted at an online-only retail approach.
In terms of after-sales service, the company plans to establish service centers in South Africa eventually. Initially, they will operate on a "swap for repair" model, allowing consumers to exchange faulty devices for replacements.
Cernotech, known for introducing niche mobile brands in South Africa, has a track record with brands like the Cat ruggedized smartphones. Goodwin highlighted their expertise in this area, stating, "Cernotech specializes in distributing non-mainstream mobile brands in South Africa."
‘Challenger brand’
Goodwin described Nothing as a “challenger brand” in the mobile market, offering premium features at lower prices than the market-leading brands.
“This is going up against the flagships,” he said. “Nothing 2 is very well priced and specced. Nothing 2a, which made the noise [internationally], is the one that will knock everyone’s socks off. It’s a high-midrange device at midrange pricing with premium specs.”
The Nothing Phone 2 has a 6.7-inch OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 system-on-chip, two 50-megapixel rear-facing cameras, a 32MP selfie camera, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, an under-display fingerprint scanner, and a 4 700mAh battery.
The 2a model has a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro 5G system-on-chip, dual 50MP rear cameras, 32MP selfie camera and 5 000mAh battery.
Both phones ship with Nothing OS, an operating system based on Android underpinnings. The phones offer three years of Android updates and four years of security updates.
Unique to the Nothing Phone is the “Glyph Interface”, which – when placed face down – provides a “new way to interact with a smartphone through customisable light patterns and sounds”.
